muVee Revu : Guru

I really think Mani should not have taken Nayagan for every movie i watch of his ..i try to measure with that all time gr8....its not fair on him....but isnt everything in this world relative.....Coming to Guru....its a well made film...but certainly not his best.....evrything about the movie seemed to be right except the feel of the movie....i.e i did not get the usual goosebumps after coming after his movie..

Story-wise the movie was brilliant ...it cleverly avoided all controversies it COULD have attached itself to....

On a negative thought...the Mallika Sherawat number was totally inappropriate....it looked like it was cramped into the movie..which already had a "stuffed with songs" first half...Vidya Balan was terrible....no not her acting..she was extremely good for a nothing role....Another disheartening thing was the usually reliance ..er reliable Arr background score...other than Jaage Hain it just did not strike a chord... I actually expected the movie to be visually great but Rajeev Menon did nothing more than what his younger contemporary's are doing now...(that is the problem with a lot of expectations.)Choreography sucked....seriously....picturisation of songs also did not measure up..(mani's worst enemy :Mani)

Enough of bashing...Songs were really gr8...m actually one of the exclusive Ek lo Ek Muft Song Fan Club member....The introduction of Maddy ..the whole sequence of scenes just b4 the intermission were cult stuff(Ab Jr saying No one can stop him...was fantablous)....Aishwarya was gorgeous so was her looks(lucky........)....The Kids singing Jaage Hain was one of the most touching moments of the movie....Also another aspect of this movie was the juxtaposing of the characters in such way that they were against each other but still like each other was a master stroke from mani...the only ubqitious good thing about the movie was the persona of Ab jr.. he carries the movie on his shoulder(maybe the only mani movie..)..ITS HIS MOVIE...WATCH IT FOR DHIRUBHAI er...GURUBHAI

Hey ! Nice review ! *applause* :)
I read that the movie is based on the real life story of a middle class textile merchant by the name Guru ...Desai .
You have'nt forgotten the words you studied for GRE , have you ?

hmnnnnnnn.........
im kinda surprised with the review hehehehe
GURU--not his best 4 sure.
but i think it is right up there.
just some points i disagree on---
1.Rajiv Menon---Barso Re was shot brilliantly,i would call it world class stuff. And most of movie had this 1950's 1960's or 70's look.In Ek Lo Ek Muft---it was top notch camera work.
2.Vidhya Balan---I absolutely find nothing wrong in her role or acting.
3.ARR---this freaked me hahaha
Ay Hairathe is Vintage ARR.
There r some lovely backgrounds--barso pieces,Jaage Hainnnnn was world class.

I think the point is its about a man's life,so the flexibility or space for adding dimensions is somewht minimised.

and if ur gonna compare Nayagan with every movie---UR NEVER GONNA LIKE ANY MOVIEEEEEEEEEE.

This review for a moment makes me wonder if GURU falls in MR's league ----Verdict---It Just About makes it, very comfortably infact.

hmmm...Barso re...those shots where he slowed down the camera pace was a wee bit irritating....but the pt is that the choregraphy just did not measure up...keep in mind that i did not say it was bad...i just said with Mani ..its gotta be astounding...good aint enough....
the problem with the Vidya balan role for me was that she acted really well..and deserved more reel space...thats why i was a little dissappointed...with ARR...again you cited that it had SOME good bgms.. you gave the answer for my complaint ....with these people the words :SOME..GOOD..even GREAT dont make sense...
btw i had no issues with the songs...Ay Hayrithe is really cool...
ok Nayagan was not fair...
lemme ask you another question...
Was it beter than Kannathil...????

well if u compare overall Kannathil was better....
but having said that both are different movies----The Comparision Game is like a NECCESSARY EVIL.
Guru---AB was the fulcrum and others characters revolved around him.One of the Very Few drawbacks in this is that His growth could have been shown better as in more emphasis on that, that could have created the MR MAGIC ur talking about.Ok my question now is can Narration Style get any better???????

all right.. for one i hvnt watched guru.. but i thought ur review was well written.. yes i know u r a huge MR fan.. so u were able to compare and contrast the movie with his better makes.. i saw the trailor of guru and second ur opinion that the choreography sucked!! all right thats a bit abt wat i thought.. and whn i watched the movie (IF that ever happens) i'l let u know :)

(2 deepak!!)its not the issue of getting better or worse...will not want to value his each movie empirically...the point is the overall feel of the movie when u come out of the theater...i could feel for amutha ..for nanditha..for simran..for prakash raj...for maddy...but when it comes to guru..i think it was a little TOO dramatic...unneccesary..

Can't agree with you more! Being a Mani fan doesn't stop me from criticizing his works! This movie lacks his touch somehow!
